What is Fertility Medicine?

Fertility medicine deals with the many and varied reasons why a couple may not be able to conceive a child. Specialising in assessing and treating infertility, this is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynaecology.

A fertility clinic can find itself dealing with a very broad range of conditions. The fertility medicine discipline covers everything from blocked or damaged tubes – something called endometriosis – to every aspect of male and female fertility, looking into problems like fibroids and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovulation issues and miscarriage, reduced ovary function and abnormal sperm or semen.

What should you expect at the Fertility Medicine clinic?

You will probably need to attend a fertility clinic with your partner, since it takes two to conceive and either of you or both of you, could be suffering from fertility issues.  The first step is lots of questions, asked by your fertility expert so they can come up with an accurate diagnosis. Your answers will drive the treatment plan you eventually get. This is also your opportunity to ask questions.

As a woman, you may have a full hormone profile test, and might even have an ultrasound scan to check the ovaries and womb. Both of you might need to have a blood test and, as a man, highly likely you’ll have your sperm tested. Investigations can also include ovulation assessment, endocrine assessment, pelvic ultrasound, fallopian tube assessment, laparoscopy, and hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography for women, plus ultrasound testing for men.
