I fell skiing in February and ruptured my ACL and also had a meniscus tear. Mr Mughal prescribed physio for 6 weeks and in that time my knee got stronger and the meniscus healed itself. He then recommended an ACL reconstruction with allograft, which he performed in May. He said if I didn't have the operation, I risked the ruptured ACL damaging the good part of my knee. As I have a simple office job where I remain seated most of the time, I only needed two days off work; one for the operation and the day afterwards. I alternated between doses of ibuprofen and paracetamol for the first week but rarely needed painkillers after that. The only challenging time was when I first got out of bed the day after the op. I should have had a little step by the bed to step onto and taken painkillers first. I was able to fully weight bear straight away. It is now July and I can swim and also walk 4 miles comfortably in a day – 8 miles is a little too much but my knee is improving day by day. Mr Mughal told me it would take about a year for my knee to heal after the op and I acknowledge I should be more disciplined in doing my physio exercises. However from looking at my knees it is difficult to tell one from the other. Whenever I show anyone my scar they tell me how neat it is. Mr Mughal did superb stitches by hand. He gave me an allograft (donor tissue) because my leg was too short for an autograft (own tissue). I could have had an autograft but that may have meant taking two grafts from my leg because I don't have long legs. Mr Mughal told me that the advantage of an allograft was that he could choose a really good one to insert. The leg was a little swollen for a week or so afterwards and the knee felt like it had an elastic band around it whenever I felt tired or stressed in the afternoons for the first few weeks. My hamstring remains strong and my knee is amazing. I am so grateful to Mr Mughal. In addition to being a wonderful surgeon, he has a very caring and pastoral disposition. Many people don't have an ACL op because they are too scared but under Mr Mughal's care there is nothing to be scared about provided you have a few sweets eg. refreshers to replenish sugar levels immediately after the op. The whole experience has been superb and I can't recommend Mr Mughal enough.
