Very direct, no fluffing stuff up, best way sometimes, at least you know where you stand, (pardon the pun as appointment related to knees and their future doesn't look).

Mr Mughal is one of the kindest people I have ever met.He is so therapeutic. He is confident in every procedure he undertakes and is especially passionate about knees. Some people could be tempted to choose a surgeon with 40 years' experience rather than 27 but that isn't necessarily a good thing as I believe the older we get, the more tired we become. Mr Mughal is a Senior Honorary Lecturer at University of Birmingham and continues develop himself by carrying out research in addition to caring for his clients and so his knowledge and expertise is always fresh and current. He is energetic and fully focused. He also makes sure admin tasks are done correctly with the support of his excellent secretary and even looked up some of the insurance codes I needed for me when arranging my operation, which I will mention shortly. I have only just started my knee journey with Mr Mughal - I ruptured my ACL in February 2024, had a 2-3 ligament tear which has nearly healed and also very thin cartilage behind my knee and some arthritis. I fell skiing in France and the doctor there told me to get an MRI scan as soon as possible in the UK as he thought I may have ruptured my ACL but wasn't sure - I couldn't relax as the French doctor poked the back of my knee with his finger. The French doctor gave me a brace with the ability to bend my knee in it and told me to keep it on all the time and sleep in it. My Mum (physio) kept telling me to bend my knee and to stop hitching my hip - not easy. I kept the brace on and it did feel protective but my leg felt so much better when Mr Mughal told me to remove it when I saw him several weeks later. Here follows my story about how I came lucky enough to have Mr Mughal. My insurer gave me the choice of two names and I chose one of them. I hadn't realised there were various other surgeons I could have chosen at Nuffield Wolverhampton, which currently lists all consultants of different specialisms together on their website not in order of specialism. I had to wait several weeks before seeing someone and I was very disappointed when I arrived to discover the surgeon wasn't able to see me. Mr Mughal agreed to fit me in and I felt ecstatic. I had had a terrible experience with a GP who hadn't engaged with me very well and who put latex gloves on and really hurt my knee as he examined it. I was terrified Mr Mughal would hurt my knee like the GP had done. Mr Mughal didn't. He examined my knee gently without hurting me at all and agreed to see me again after I had had an MRI scan. The next time I saw him he prescribed physio for 6 weeks. He looked at me with real love and care when he revealed how bad my knee was. He examined my knee more extensively as I relaxed and, not only is Mr Mughal a surgeon, he is also someone who has a nice touch. Every time he has examined my knee it has felt comfortable and soothing. I was going to Exeter the following weekend and to a standing only pop concert and worried whether my knee would be up to so much walking or whether I needed to worry about it swelling. He said I didn't need to worry and I felt so happy and had a great weekend other than testing my friend's patience at times as my walking got slower and slower at the end of the first night especially. My knee did swell a bit but frozen peas which I kept in the freezer of the B&B worked well. Whenever I have expressed a worry to Mr Mughal about my knee he has eased that worry. I felt disappointed I would need to wait for an ACL reconstruction but my knee has become stronger and the medial tear I have has nearly healed as has the bruised bone. My knee is in as good a situation as it can be pre op. I'm going to have an allograft because the area behind my patella is in such a bad state from years of wear and tear and my legs are too short to collect tissue from above the knee and the area below the knee is small too. Mr Mughal said he needs 8 inches of tissue and enthused about being able to get exactly the length he wanted with an allograft (donor tissue). I know he would use various parts of me and join them up if I was adverse to an allograft but an allograft seems best. I am a bit nervous but I am viewing it as a healing experience. I know when a year has passed I will still experience knee pain because of my arthritis and lack of cartilage but I'm optimistic. I'm confident that the dull aches after lots of walking that I am not used to, but which have arisen following my injury, and also the tightness at the back of my knee, will get better. I don't want to walk around with a ruptured ACL forever worrying about my knee giving way or feeling worried about climbing a stepladder. I want my knee to feel like it did before I fell and it not to hurt or feel strange when I kneel. Mr Mughal told me that if I don't have the op I risk the ruptured ACL damaging the good part of my knee (yes there is a good part!) and stability issues. My other knee is hurting more often than it used to because it is working harder. I know Mr Mughal is an expert at replacing knee caps but I'm not in a rush for those because I'm not quite 50. Mr Mughal said I might need steroid injections in my knees in the future if they get too painful and maybe replacement knee caps and I will bear those in mind. If ever I experience any problems with my back or hip in the future I am happy to know that I can rely on him for those areas too. Thanks Mr Mughal for taking me on. You haven't operated yet but your care has brought some emotional healing to me and I feel relaxed at the prospect of surgery. I have loved being your client so far and I am looking forward to continuing my knee journey with you for many years to come.
