About

Dr Benjamin Hope is a Consultant Paediatrian and Gastroenterologist with over 20 years' experience. He is currently based in London and sees private patients at King's College Hospital Guthrie clinic, Harley Row Clinic in Harley St, and The Riverside Practice in Forest Row.

Dr Hope completed his medical degree at University College London Medical School in 2001 followed by training in Scotland, New Zealand and Ireland at national referral centres. During this time, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Paediatrics before moving back to the UK. He became registered as a specialist in paediatrics with the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2012 and became registered as a specialist in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition in 2014. He joined King's College Hospital as a GI Consultant in 2012.

Dr Hope's expertise covers the full range of childhood intestinal and nutrional disorders  including:

  • coeliac disease, gluten intolerance and food allergies
  • abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting
  • gastro oesophageal reflux disease and infant colic
  • inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis)
  • disorders of gut brain axis (previously known as functional GI disorders) e.g. irritable bowel syndrome
  • intestinal failure, short gut syndrome, intravenous nutrition and complex enteral feeding

He is an accredited trainer in diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) and can carry out additional investigations when needed including capsule endoscopy and impedence tests.

In 2023 he broadened the scope of his practice by joining the Lewisham CAMHS neurodisability team looking after children with autism ADHD and learning difficulties. He also joined Harley Row Clinic, focusing on children with suspected ADHD.

Dr Hope's goal is quickly to establish the nature of his patient's problem, make sure the patient and their familes understand it, and arrange the most suitable intervention.

Explanation

Dr Hope looked after our 5 year old son over an approx 18 month period. He is very calm, listens and engaged with our son brilliantly. We felt he explored and explained a full range of options and we were included in the treatment decisions. When it came to surgery again Dr Hope's approach is calm, clear and informative which was exactly what we needed. Our son really trusted him and that was the most important for us - he said "Dr Hope was a totally top doctor" - High Praise!

Explanation

Absolutely wonderful doctor. I came across Dr Hope's details on another website and chose him because tries to get to the bottom of whatever the issue might be, rather than just diagnosing IBS, which some others might be prone to do. And he did absolutely that! He got to the bottom of our issue. His 'bedside manner' with his patient and myself, the patient's parent, was calm, reassuring and "open eared". A vital element of doctoring is an open eared approach. Dr Hope listened to his teenage patient and answered all his questions thoroughly. His patient approach put the shy teen at ease and brought him out of his shell. I think Dr Hope deals with young ones really well, for one thing, he didn't take my teen's sometimes sullen demeanour or one-word answers to heart. He still gave his patient time and space to ask questions and answered them without jargon. I would recommend him any time. Mother to a teenage patient.
