Dr Gaurav Kumar is the head of radiotherapy services at The James Cook University Hospital and an active member in the Northern Radiotherapy Network (NRN).
He was trained for 10 years in different sub-specialties within oncology, including Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologist (FRCR) prior to substantive appointment as a consultant clinical oncologist at James Cook University Hospital in February 2016.
Dr Kumar was trained in all aspects of general oncology and currently works in a large secondary and tertiary cardiac centre with a referral population of > 1.3 million, covering radiotherapy and chemotherapy including immunotherapy and other forms of precision molecular targeted drug therapies. Dr Kumar regularly manage patients with malignant conditions including lung cancer, prostate and bladder cancers. Dr Kumar provides specialist services in cancer systemic therapy to three acute NHS Trusts. He also provides services as a private clinical oncologist at several hospitals.
Dr Kumar has vast clinical experience in treating lung and uro-oncology. Dr. Kumar has developed hypofractionation during COVID19 pandemic, including single fraction stereotactic radiotherapy (SABR) in lung cancers. He’s an active member of the trusts’ stereotactic ablative radiotherapy group. Dr Kumar is the clinical lead for prostate cancers in the trust. He’s heading the pilot project (‘’EARLY’’- Easy Access to Radical Lung cancer chemoradiotherapy) to streamline lung cancer treatment. He also leads the palliative radiotherapy pathway in the trust called ‘’PRISM’’ (Palliative Radiotherapy In-patient Service Management). He’s involved in clinical research, trials & teaching and has published peer reviewed articles in renowned medical journals.
Dr Kumar received training in proton therapy at the prestigious radiation oncology department of Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2019.
