Mr Jibin Francis is a Consultant Neurosurgeon, with an interest in spinal neurosurgery. He is the lead for Spinal surgery at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, and the Clinical Lead for the East of England Spinal Network. He treats a wide range of spinal conditions, including those arising from the intervertebral discs, nerve or spinal cord compression, spinal injuries, tumours, and infections. He also has a special interest in the neurosurgical management of conditions related to spinal fluid flow, including spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH), Chiari malformation, syringomyelia, and arachnoid webs and cysts.
Minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical techniques are employed in the majority of the operations he performs for disc prolapse and spinal stenosis, and, in 2023, Jibin introduced full endoscopic spinal surgery in Cambridge as an extension of these principles. These techniques deliver the same surgical results with the least possible trauma to surrounding tissues.
He completed fellowships at the John Radcliffe in Oxford, and a combined orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal fellowship in Cambridge. Prior to this, Jibin ran a busy neurosurgical practice in South Africa from 2012, treating the vast majority of brain and spinal conditions requiring surgery, until deciding to focus on complex spinal conditions and advanced techniques in 2017.
Jibin is directly involved in neurosurgical training at both undergraduate (serving as speciality lead for Neurosurgical teaching) and postgraduate levels. He is a faculty member on various national neurosurgical courses.

Mr Jibin Francis is friendly and clear with patients. He provides explanations for diagnoses, reviews MRI scans, and details conditions, treatment options, risks, and recovery. Patients feel understood, gain confidence in their care plan, and consider various interventions such as spinal operations, nerve root injections, or pain management strategies. His expertise addresses various back conditions, including lower back pain and spinal cord compression.
Admitted for surgery for repair of a tear in my dura. All risks had been explained in detail by Mr Francis prior to my admission. Mr Francis came to see me the evening of my surgery and the following day and also telephoned me at home 2 weeks later to check on my progress. I felt very reassured by all the care and explanations given to me and grateful to be under the care of such an experienced surgeon.
Mr Francis came across as a very nice man. answered any questions my husband and i had. Explained what was going to happen in surgery. Took his time and wasnt in any rush. I have seen a few consultants in my adult life and would say Mr. Francis is one of the best i have seen.
Surgery went very well, they did what they said they would do. Only negative was that I was very nearly cancelled.
The hospital is in a good location with easy access. Very pleasant environment and a friendly greeting at reception. Appointment was slightly late but nothing to moan about. Mr Francis was extremely pleasant with a superb 'bedside manner'. He explained everything clearly and was genuine in his approach to how we could progress my problem.
Really pleased with the results of the operation but a bit concerned that I haven’t heard about a follow up appointment which is stated on my discharge notes for 8to12 weeks after the op.
I felt that Mr J Francis took the time to explain things to me. He had an approachable manner & I felt that he had time to spend to answer any questions I had.
The consultation was good. The issue about cancelations was touch on briefly. The problem being that if the information was gleaned in the six month window there may have been an opportunity to correct the condition with earlier intervention. seven months have lapsed since the flare up. This is a long time and several appointment cancelations left me feeling aggrieved. I now have a clear route to surgery and an interim cortisone injection. I hope this is acted on swiftly and the procedures get me back to a state of less pain and discomfort.
Having had a less than satisfactory experience with a previous consultant it was a pleasure to meet Mr. Francis. He took time explaining everything in great detail and made me feel that he had a genuine interest in my case. Since my consultation I have received a detailed explanation of Mr. Francis opinion of my case and possible ways forward. 5 star rating from me.
