I met Consultant Mark Phillips as I was suffering from a benign tumour on my finger. He was friendly and professional and I felt more at ease when he explained that many members of orchestras chose him to work upon their hands. I had the operation under local anaesthetic which I preferred, only an hour procedure and I went home by tube. Now, in two months+ time the stitching is almost imperceptible, the best! My experience in the care of Mr Phillips was excellent. Particularly as someone whose primary hobbies involve strenuous use of my hands - handbalancing, acrobatics and bouldering - my recent hand injury was having a huge impact on my quality of life as well as limiting my daily functioning. Yet I was also worried about the risks associated with any invasive interventions.
