Professor Biswas is a highly regarded ophthalmic surgeon specialising in paediatric ophthalmology. He completed his general ophthalmology training at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital before further advancing his expertise with fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and King's College Hospital, London.
Since 2002, Professor Biswas has served as a consultant ophthalmologist at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, one of the leading eye hospitals in the UK, known for its outstanding care, patient outcomes, and educational opportunities. Between 2012 and 2018, he held the position of Clinical Head of Division at the hospital and served as the Lead for Paediatric Ophthalmology until 2025. He was appointed as a Professor at Manchester University in 2023 and currently holds the role of Vice President of the British Isles Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association (BIPOSA).
In addition to his clinical work, Professor Biswas has a strong presence in national and international ophthalmic communities. He was Chair of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Paediatric Subcommittee from 2019 to 2024 and has been instrumental in the development of guidelines for retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment. He has also contributed to the development of guidelines for ophthalmic findings in abusive head injury and paediatric Stevens-Johnson syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
Professor Biswas graduated in Medicine and Surgery from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 1992. He is recognised for his clinical excellence, research contributions, and leadership within the field. He is also actively involved in research, serving as the Principal Investigator for three industry-sponsored studies and one investigator-led multicentre randomized controlled trial at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Additionally, he has been a co-investigator in gene therapy trials and in trials for the Argus II Retinal Implant (bionic eye).
Through his extensive training and leadership roles, Professor Biswas has mentored many paediatric ophthalmologists, many of whom now hold consultant positions in prominent hospitals in the UK, Ireland, and internationally.

Professor Biswas has been absolutely wonderful Kind in his manner Very clear in his explanations Not pushing surgery, just patiently going through pros & cons & advising us in our situation But when we did decide to have surgery he has done a fantastic job. Feel very blessed to have had my daughter under his care. His secretary Grainne has also been so accommodating & very lovely & thé Orthoptist (forgive me I forgot your name) has also been absolutely brilliant - kind & thorough, patient with great explanations.
