Professor Patrick Stone, also known as Paddy Stone, is an experienced consultant in Palliative Medicine. He holds the position of Professor in Palliative Medicine at University College London (UCL). He pursued his education at Wimbledon College, Caius College, and St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. He successfully completed his medical degree in 1990.
Dr. Stone became a consultant in 2001 when he assumed his first consultant appointment at St George's Hospital. In 2014, he was appointed as the head of the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department at UCL. He also holds an honorary consultant position at UCLH.
Dr Stone's research interests involve critical aspects of palliative care, including the mechanisms and management of cancer-related fatigue, prognosis of advanced cancer, and the assessment of quality of life and symptoms in palliative care settings.
His clinical expertise lies in palliative care, hospice care, pain control, symptom management, and supportive care. Dr Stone has actively contributed to the field of palliative medicine through his involvement in various organisations. He has been a member of the Association of Palliative Medicine (APM) since 1993, served as the chair of the APM Science committee from 2012 to 2014, and participated in the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Palliative care clinical studies group from 2003 to 2010. He also served as the Secretary of the Palliative Care Research Society (UK) from 1999 to 2004.
He currently leads research initiatives, including the Prognosis in Palliative care Study (PiPS) II, a national study funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which focuses on prognosis in advanced cancer.
