Mr Ashok Menon

Mr Ashok Menon is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon with more than a decade of specialist experience in the treatment of acid reflux, gallstones, hernias, and other complex benign Upper GI conditions across both the NHS and private sector. After studying Medicine at University of Cambridge, he completed specialist training in Upper GI, bariatric, and general surgery in Leeds, London, Liverpool, and Manchester.

Mr Menon previously worked as a Consultant Surgeon at Arrowe Park Hospital, where he helped improve the management of acute biliary emergencies and established a pioneering Laparoscopic Transgastric ERCP service for treating common bile duct stones following bariatric surgery, one of only a few such services in the North West of England.

He has extensive expertise in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and has performed more than 1,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies for gallbladder disease. His practice also focuses on advanced keyhole surgery for complex benign Upper GI disorders, including anti-reflux surgery, achalasia, large hiatus hernias, and bile duct stone management. His approach emphasises evidence-based care, modern surgical techniques, and enhanced patient recovery.

For the past eight years, Mr Menon has been part of the Upper GI surgical team at Stepping Hill Hospital, contributing to the development of one of Greater Manchester’s leading centres for complex benign Upper GI surgery. He also serves as Upper GI Cancer Lead for Stockport, supporting the expansion of Clinical Nurse Specialist, Advanced Clinical Practitioner, and Cancer Navigator services to improve patient support and continuity of care. In 2022, he was nominated by colleagues for an “Inspirational Leader” award in recognition of his leadership as Lead Clinician.

Mr Menon has introduced several innovative techniques to his NHS practice, including intraoperative indocyanine green (ICG) imaging, transnasal oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD), and the re-establishment of the Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration service after a decade-long absence. He was recently elected Secretary of the British Benign Upper GI Surgical Society, where he supports education, training, and collaboration in Upper GI surgery across the North West.

His private practice is based at Spire Regency Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital, where he provides patient-centred care for a wide range of Upper GI and general surgical conditions, with a particular interest in the management of acid reflux disease.
