Professor Pankaj Sharma is a Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College London and Professor of Neurology at the Royal Holloway College where he is also Director of the internationally renowned Institute of Cardiovascular Research (ICR2UL). He has a specialist interest in headaches, strokes, dizziness, seizures, fits and epilepsy.
After graduating from the London Hospital Medical School in 1998, he went on to complete further training in clinical pharmacology and neurology and is the only UK neurologist to hold specialist European accreditation in the management of hypertension. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University in 1994, before becoming a British Heart Foundation Clinician Scientist and then a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard Medical School.
He is currently Honorary Medical Director of the UK charity Different Strokes and Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Society of Medicine Cardiovascular Disease journal. He is a fellow and examiner of the Royal College of Physicians and the Medical Society of London. He also is a member of the Association of British Neurologist and the British Hypertension Society.
Professor Sharma is actively involved in clinical research with a particular interest in the genetics of stroke in ethnic minority populations. He has been published in various papers and book chapters and has edited two books. He regularly provides expert advice on brain and stroke matters for television (BBC, CNN) and radio. In 2015 he was named the UK's top Asian Doctor and was profiled in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
