I am delighted to be able to submit this review on the consultancy and REZUM operation provided by Professor Raj Persad of the Bristol Urology Associates. Having suffered with BPH for many years, with symptoms gradually worsening until a visit to A&E was needed due to retention, I had the REZUM procedure under general anaesthetic at the Spire Hospital and recovered quickly with absolutely no discomfort immediately after or since the op. I can now happily declare that a normal life has returned following the REZUM treatment with no urgency, excellent flow rate and minimal night trips to the loo. As a keen sportsman, I was back to vigorous bike sessions after 3 weeks without any problems. Another added bonus is that I now no longer need to take any BPH related medication. I had a sub-inguinal microscopic varicocelectomy performed by Professor Persad. I had been trying to conceive without luck for two years and had deteriorating sperm quality. I then had the procedure performed and conceived the first time of trying. Of course I can't guarantee everyone will have such a good outcome but it made the surgery very worthwhile! He explained the recovery process clearly - it went smoothly and my scar healed up perfectly. Professor Persad was incredibly gracious with his time, explaining the procedure clearly and answering any questions I had. On the day he was calm and made me feel at ease. He then answered any other questions I had during my follow up. His patient manner combines a perfect blend of friendliness and expert knowledge to a level I haven't seen before. I chose to have the procedure performed by Professor Persad because of his expertise using a microscope, meaning the procedure has fewer complications and a very low rate of varicocele recurrence.

In a circumstance where your health is on the line, communication between Dr and patient is crucial, understanding what medical terms actually mean, what the implications or the operations will be, the risks and the recovery. Thankfully, Dr Persad made me feel that I fully understood my position and so I felt at ease. As with medical procedures that require a waiting list, there were bumps in the road that delayed my treatment. Despite that, I had continued reassurance from the team. Overall, my experience was brilliant because now after nine years, I am pain free and - I can run.
